Not sure why you claim IRCC isn’t helpful when they have it outlined on their [website](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-5552-applying-change-conditions-extend-your-stay-canada-student.html#before) what documents they’re looking for when asking for proof of funds..

A quick google search of “study permit extension proof of funds” will tell you that you need to have enough funds to cover tuition for the year and a minimum 20k in an account in *your* name. 

Which you would’ve had to do when you first applied for the study permit - show funds to support yourself for the *entirety* of your studies, so have you blown through that money already? Perhaps studying in Canada is not a good idea for you if so. 

In one comment you say you want to extend your permit by ‘a little longer,’ 8 months is *not* a little amount of time. Wouldn’t be surprised if IRCC sees this as a red flag.

Update: got the extension till next March 2026, went through an immigration lawyer, guided me well and allowed me to draft a proper LOE.

I’m sorry to hear that, please talk to your academic advisor, an international advisor (your college should have one, they support international students). Also if possible talk to an immigration consultant from a legitimate law firm.

I’m actually on academic suspension right now from U of M since December 2022 and will expire on December 2023… here is what I did

- I applied to TRU  and paid my tuition deposit with a start date of January 2023. But the university deferred my start date till September 2023
- When I applied for study permit extension, it was refused because the officer said I can’t be in canada on a study permit without attending classes since my new start date was September 2023
- so I got an immigration lawyer and applied to change my status to Visitor so I could stay in canada till September 
- After my visitor record was approved, I applied to reinstate my my study permit and was approved with 7 weeks… (p.s of you are applying for study permit extension it takes about 3 months )
- if your study permit is expired or about to expire,pls DONT LEAVE CANADA because it will be much more difficult to apply from outside canada
- my advice will be to change to visitor visa and reapply to reinstate your student permit record …

Depending on your institution, some allow auto return when the period ends, and some require new application when you return. Either way you should change your status to visitor as soon as the suspension starts, and then either go home or be a visitor only in Canada. When you return, apply for study permit and prove to IRCC with whatever documents your institution provides. Good luck.

IRCC will not offer extensions for low GPA. You will need to apply for a new study permit in a different course/college.

"The exact same thing happened to me. It depends on your suspension, but for me, I was not allowed to study for a year. According to IRCC, you have to be admitted to another institute or program within 150 days; otherwise, you'll be out of status and need to reapply for a visa and everything.

In short, apply to other institutes and ensure you're admitted within 150 days. IRCC can extend your study permit as long as you're admitted to any learning institute. Also, you cannot legally work in Canada while suspended. You'll need to be admitted to another institute to work legally.

Alternatively, you can contact your student advocate services, undergraduate dean, or student advisors. If this is your first suspension, they can grant you a waiver. You'll need to appeal, and the college can grant you an appeal; you just have to request it and explain why it happened and your determination to improve your GPA."

I was suspended, i applied to another college got the acceptance letter, paid the fees and everything. Called ircc to transfer my DLI number.

Good for the working class people (some respite from wage suppression) in Canada, qualified students in Canada, and under-qualified prospects who would have regretted their decision much later.

Most of the “students” that go to diploma mills in Canada are from rural India, and aren’t exactly the type that are on Reddit. 

I don’t think you will find them here. Most people here are urban, middle/upper middle class. People here aren’t going to leave their families, travel have way across the board to work at Tim Hortons and live with 5 roommates, making minimum wage. 

When you see people in Canada, living under this circumstances, imagine what circumstances they may have back home for them to choose to live in Canada like that. 

But, overall, Indian media has taken up this issue and provided a lot of coverage. Now people in india are much more aware of what life in Canada is actually like, and it will significantly reduce india student interest in coming to Canada. Atleast the ones that aren’t that desperate. 

Fault also lies with many who are already there. They portray this magical life in Canada on Instagram with photos, while working and struggling to pay rent. Way too many people flexing their “life in Canada” which distorts the reality for people back home. 

I know many who tell their family back home “I work at amazon” making it sound like they are making $150k doing tech, but in reality are delivering packages for amazon in Canada. They just do not want to admit to their parents, who spent a fortune to send them to Canada that they don’t have the magical life they envisioned. 

Many I know are also stuck in Canada, they spent $50k to come to Canada, often times borrowing that money, only to realise their degree is garbage, they have no job prospects, now they cannot return to india with that big of a debt as it will take forever to pay it off. They end up doing minimum wage job in Canada, living with 5 roommates to pay it off.

And they can’t return because they can’t get a job in india that pays well, because they spent last 5 years of their life in Canada working at Tim hortons or driving for Uber. They have a worthless “diploma” from a Canadian degree mill. What job will they get back home? 

People are now realising what a mess this is.

Edit: there are also many legit students that go to Canada, go to UBC, McGill, Waterloo etc. I know someone who is doing a PhD in Waterloo in AI (one of the best schools in the world for AI). Many go to Canada because their employer in india sends them there (like amazon, Microsoft, google) as US immigration is a dumpster fire. They send them to the Canada office. These people make a lot of money, like $200-300k in Canada.

Having studied in Canada and living as PR, I will tell you this.

I know people in my university studying right now. They get more students than professors , barely any classes are conducted and most of the time everyone is waitlisted for every class. 

I never had this issue back in 2016-2018. No wait list . No class cancelation . Nothing like that.

In terms of job opportunities. Stable jobs are getting extremely competitive. What took me 3 months to land an admin job will now take people atleast 6-7 months now. 

Not to mention higher cost of living, interest rates etc. While this point affects all Canadians, Any international student is not fully aware about it.

I am pro immigration. But universities bringing students just to get income and not concerned with education quality has to be stopped .

1. All of these are not applicable for Masters and PhD courses, so take those and not diploma courses or certificate courses.
2. Stay away from courses run by private diploma mills under contract from actual universities. Those are worthless anyways.
3. Look into the REAL cost of attending the course. Tuition fee, housing expense and boarding expenses. They will come much more than 20K CDN + Tuition fee, so accommodate that.

When you say students' work permits expire after graduation, I suppose you are referring to students that are part of a co-op program? I am not sure if non co-op student are eligible for a work permit before graduation. Also, I think co-op students should be able to apply for a new one after graduation.

Indian students always criticize to Canada (education, housing, life), but the fact is that they also find a lot of ways to come there as a long-term settlement intention. If Indian is better than Canada like people said in this topics, please don't go to Canada.  
It is about 80% Indian in Canada was very bad actors in Canada, they make everything worse owning to their behaviours. The IRCC makes recent changes for international students as a result of many problems coming mainly from Indian students like 700 invalid study permits, taking food of PR and Canadian from food bank at Brampton, no rental payments for landlords as well as skipping classes for part-time jobs but wanting to understand the knowledge -&gt; complain teachers? ??  
The IRCC should reduce the number of Indian students to 50% instead of capping all foreign students. It can make Canada more diversity and fairness.

You can check the requirements on your CG key account for the study permit extension. Try to apply as soon as possible, given potential delays. Dont wait till the last minute !! If you have a sponsor, focus on providing necessary financial documents; however, if you're self-funded, transcripts of your account are required. Credit scores might not be a primary factor, but maintaining good financial standing is wise. Remember not to leave Canada until your permit extension is approved. Your requirements are pretty much the same as the initial application. You'll need the LOA from your college/uni for the new program, funds in your account, or sponsor's although it doesn't have to be as much as the first time, especially if you have an invoice for first semester fee payment. Other than that, i think you'll need to fill out form IMM5709e if im not wrong and upload a passport size photograph. You can include a letter of explanation if required and if you deem it to be necessary. 

As for the credit score thing, no. It is not relevant to your application in any way.

To extend your study permit, you need to be registered in courses next semester - you’ll require an enrolment letter from the college/uni where you’ll be studying. You’ll also need to show a proof of funds (8k-10 CAD) should be enough.

I'm extending my study permit, basically I had to provide a letter from my university and the proof of funding (which is a letter from my PhD supervisor). Nothing regarding my bank account or my finances. I'm in Quebec so I had to ask first for the Certificat d'acceptation du Quebec (yes you need to be first accepted by the Quebec government before getting a visa / study permit).

It’s deeply troubling to encounter individuals who exploit the Immigration and refugee system. I know someone who arrived in Canada through the UNHCR. After hearing his story, certain details didn’t add up. Upon further investigation, I discovered he fled his homeland by boat to an East Asian country after attempting to murder his wife. In that country, he bribed officials to obtain a fake ID, claiming to be from a war-torn nation, and applied for refugee status. The UNHCR facilitated his relocation to Canada, and he obtained permanent residency in less than a year. Despite his criminal past, illiteracy, and fraudulent identity, he now resides in Canada. Alarmingly, I learned just a couple of days ago that he has continued his criminal activities from Canada, targeting individual in his native country. It’s concerning to think such individuals might pose a risk to our communities. Immigration should be more strict.
